Roll 45

Back with another roll! This is a continuation of the last roll I posted. I really enjoy mixing up my shoots with different environments. It's always fun to shoot contrasting locations. I usually start my shoot indoors when the light is a bit harsh and then move outdoors for the golden hour.

I'm sure every photographer has a method to their shoots. For me, it's very simple and an intimate experience. I like to stay focused without distractions of others, so I primarily shoot alone with models. I'll usually enter a space and take in the environment while I'm loading my film. The goal is to connect with the person in front of me. I want them to feel as comfortable as possible and I really try to engage in conversation before I even bring the viewfinder to my eye. When the moment is right I meter the model, entering my shutter speed and aperture on my camera manually. I leave these settings the same until I notice a change in light. At this point my goal is to capture emotions and tell a story through the images I make.

Shooting with film I never rely on looking at a screen and I love the simplicity of the Leica M rangefinders. I think Richard Avedon put it well, "I hate cameras. They interfere, they're always in the way. I wish: if I could work with my eyes alone." Ok, maybe I don't hate my cameras partially because I work with cameras that that really suit my work flow. When I click the shutter I'm done with that frame. It's been exposed and I'm confident that I captured exactly what my eye saw in the viewfinder.

People often ask why I still shoot film. Rolls like this are why I shoot film. When I work with film I find I'm able to capture more emotion from my subject. I'm sure this is the case for a couple reasons. First of all when I shoot with film it just has a different feel. It creates colors that I can't achieve when shooting digital and I find the grains in film to be beautiful. The images seem to be more alive to me. Secondly, and probably more importantly when I shoot film my entire process changes. With only 36 frames in a roll of 35mm film I'm careful with each frame. I don't shoot to just take photos, I shoot to create and capture images that speak to me. I watch, I engage in conversation, and when the moment is right I press the shutter. I want the person in front of me to feel comfortable and I want them to be themselves. My favorite images usually come from the simple gestures. The moments in-between when a person is being themselves. The process of shooting film slower helps me achieve this.
