Lost in Darkness

I've been wanting to shoot something a bit darker lately. A series of gloom and skin. Something about the human body in nature just captivates me. The vulnerability of being lost amongst nature in our skin has a raw feeling. I chose to edit these in b&w so the body would blend in more with the natural surroundings.

This is Abby and she really made these shots happen. The fog had rolled in, the air was wet, the temperature was dropping, and the light was drifting away, it created the mood I had desired. These are the images we created.

Roll 4

Film: Kodak Portra 160

Camera: Leica M7

Lens: 50mm 2.0

This is the final roll of the first 4 rolls I sent off to Indie Film Labs to be processed. I was very excited to shoot this roll with my friend, Angela, who lives down in Monterey. Our plan was to take a trip down the coast to Big Sur and shoot some landscape and portraiture. I hadn't shot many portraits with this film yet, so I was curious how the tones would look. Funny enough, Angela was a bit hesitant with me shooting film probably because I mentioned I wasn't sure if they'd come out. She made sure I also took shots on my digital camera as well…ha!

One thing I love when working with film is how the pace slows down.  I tend to stand back and take in my subject, whether it was Angela walking around taking photos, or just looking at the landscape. I tend to think more about my composition because the shot isn't just taking up space on my hard drive, it's costing me money and i'm also limited to the number of exposures I can take. When shooting portraits with digital I seem to take images that I almost know that won't work or that I won't edit or use. It seems like such a waste, yet it doesn't cost me anything, but it does clog up my computer. Sometimes I think I do this to keep a constant work flow with the model. Other times I'm just trying to change the way my brain sees an image and try something new, but with film there is no room for this.

I was very happy with how the Kodak Potra handled both the landscape and portrait shots. The grain is so fine and amazing! I did some post processing on the second image because my exposure was a bit off, but the rest are just as shot. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I just sent out 4 more rolls to be processed and scanned. They are a mix of Kodak Portra 160 and 400, plus a couple more rolls of Kodak Tri-X 400.

Roll 3

Shooting film might have become my new addiction! It doesn't help that I asked for some film for Christmas, so now that's it's readily available I want to capture everything I see with it! This is the first roll of b&w film that I put through my new Leica M7. It was a roll of Kodak tri-x 400 that I pushed +1 stop to 800.

I must say I was very excited to get back to shooting b&w film. When I was in high school I learned the basic rules of photography with this format. I developed all my own negatives and made my own prints in b&w and sadly when I finished these classes I basically never shot b&w film again. Lately with my digital portrait work I have fallen in love with b&w, but I miss the true look of b&w film.

Some of my favorite images from this roll are from the Cavalia Odysseo performance I went too in San Francisco. It's basically a Las Vegas style performance much like Cirque du Soleil. The sold out performance blew me away and I snuck these photos without looking through the viewfinder.

And if you all are wondering, I think I'm going to blog each roll I put through my camera. I figure it'll be a great way to share my film work and hopefully it'll spark some interest in you guys to give film a try.

Back to film - Rolls 1&2

After taking a 11 year break from shooting film I'm happy to be back.  A couple months ago I picked up a Leica M7 which has been my dream camera ever since it was released in 2002.  I paired it along with a 50mm Summicron (2.0) lens and I have fallen in love with this combination.  I will say it has taken some getting use to with shooting this camera. I hadn't had much experience with a rangefinder camera, but I convinced myself that wouldn't matter. I loved the clean look of the Leica and I love how rangefinders are just so simple. All there is to worry about is the focus, shutter, and aperture. Once you put the film in there is not need to worry about the ISO. I was a bit worried about the manual focus. I hadn't had that much experience doing so and especially with the rangefinder which you focus two images into one, but found out it's easier than it sounded!

I went on a trip to Seattle last month and decided the only camera I would bring would be my new M7! I put roughly two rolls of Kodak Portra 160 through my camera and when I returned home I shipped my film off to Indie Film Labs, which they developed and scanned my negatives. I had no idea if they would turn out, or if I had inserted the film correctly or if the camera was even working properly.  I have to say I was happy with my results!

Shooting on the fly with Abby

I recently linked up with a Abigail (@arosevan) from Portland, OR and on a whim we did an amazing shoot in San Francisco. I have to say it was among one of my favorite shoots because we just clicked! It was like we almost knew what we were just thinking and I ended up taking the most photos I've ever done during a shoot.  We hit up some of my favorite parts of the city including Golden Gate Park, Fidi, and Chinatown! Best of all she has some amazing freckles that fit right in with my #freckledhalfs hashtag project I just started over on my Instagram. Hope you enjoy!
